Parbold to Appley Bdge Canal Trail -Douglas Chapel
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal was the first of the Trans-Pennine canals to be started and the last to be completed. The length and the complexity of the route meant that the canal took 46 years to build at a cost of five times the original budget. The villages, towns and beautiful scenery you pass through on this route make it perfect Geo-Caching territory...! This is the second instalment of the Canal Trail from Parbold to Appley Bridge, the first part of the trail began in Burscough and now links caching opportunities from the West to the East of Parbold Hill together. We're taking you just off the canal for this cache which is close by the site of the ancient chapel of St. Mary which was built in prior to 1292. The Chapel was situated on the north side of the River Douglas and at the bottom of Chapel Lane in Parbold. Christ Church, Parbold, replaced the old chapel in the 1870's. 28 October, 1875 was the date that Christ Church was consecrated and the Chapel was demolished three years later in 1878. The site of the Chapel is commemorated by the cross monument you pass on the way to the cache.
