EVENT UPDATE NOTE: We are currently planning on releasing
many new caches inside the park. The goal is to give the
coordinates to people AT the event first and have them published
sometime Saturday night. The caches will also be in conjunction
with the scavenger hunt, so you'll be able to get all the new
caches and do the scavenger hunt at the same time. Please note we
will have a list of all the new caches with coordinates and
pertinent information and will hand it out at the event.
This year, we've moved the event to beautiful Glimmerglass State
Park in Cooperstown. The event will run rain or shine and from 9:30
a.m.-5 p.m. (or whenever everyone leaves!) Come for the day, cache,
eat and mingle. The picnic will be held at the West Shelter at
Glimmerglass and is right on Lake Otsego.
Activities available include:
Sand volleyball
Horseshoes
Swimming
Kayaking/canoeing
Hiking
And, of course, geocaching!
Schedule
The schedule is as follows:
9:30 a.m.: Start to check in, get info on new caches, grab a
bingo card and information on scavenger hunt. We'll also have some
breakfast items available so you can get the belly full before
going on a day of caching and hiking.
9:45 a.m.: Go over rules for scavenger hunt and other games as
needed.
10 a.m.: Scavenger hunt officially starts and new caches are
available to find!
10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Cache, scavenger hunt, mingle, bingo etc.
1-2 p.m.: We'll start cooking lunch and there will be plenty of
food available beyond 2 p.m. as well.
2 p.m.: All scavenger hunt items must be turned in by this time.
Final bingo card must be turned in as well.
2:30 p.m.: Group photo.
2:45 p.m.: Micro toss (prizes!)
3:15 p.m.: Drawing for raffle prizes.
3:30 p.m.: Mingle, cache or whatever else. Thanks for
coming!
We are working on several geocaching-themed games to hold
through the day at the event.. The games will include a scavenger
hunt, bingo and micro toss. All of these will have prizes!
Geocaches
Currently, there is one geocache in Glimmerglass. However, there
are several in downtown Cooperstown and some in the surrounding
areas. The plan at this point is to release anywhere from 10-15 (or
more) caches inside Glimmerglass, so there will hopefully be a lot
of caches people can get that day at the event. The new ones are
going to be released Saturday, but we will have sheets available
with the info for cachers at the event to get first cracks at the
new ones.
Please note that this event can be logged only one (1) time. Any
duplicate logs will be deleted.
Food
We will supply the hot dogs and burgers. We ask for everyone else
to bring some sort of a dish to pass -- even if it's a case of
water (which is always a welcomed addition!). We'll have coolers
and such available to keep things cold. We will try and keep the
page updated with who is bringing what so we don't overlap too bad!
PLEASE post here or e-mail me to let me know what you are bringing
so we can plan accordingly. Thanks!
Food
So far, this is what people are bringing. Please e-mail me or
post a note to the page to let us know what you are bringing. This
list is from notes or e-mails:
Please see my latest update to see the current food list!
Prizes
We will have some door prizes and other things along those lines.
Check the web page for more information as time gets closer!
Special thanks (so far) to Rite in the Rain, Coins and Pins and
the Cache Shack for donating!
If you would like to donate something, please e-mail me through
the link at the top of the page to let me know what you will be
donating as we are planning prizes for the games and door prizes
and like to know what we are dealing with!
Special thanks
We would like to give special thank yous to the Otsego County
Tourism for helping pay for a special giveaway at the event (more
information available at the event) as well as the Friends of
Glimmerglass for helping us secure the West Shelter for the
event!
Glimmerglass
Most state parks charge an admission fee to get in throughout the
summer. At this point, I'm not sure what Glimmerglass charges and
will post this when I get the info. I'm hoping to work something
out there, if possible. The Empire Pass will, of course, get you in
for free. The event is fully free, but to get in the park is a
small admission fee.
About the park
Glimmerglass was named as one of the Top 100 Campgrounds int he
nation in 2005. Located eight miles outside of the village of
Cooperstown, Glimmerglass overlooks Otsego Lake. There are woods
and open areas, a nice trail system and amazing views of the lake.
There is also historic Hyde Hall Mansion nearby, as well as the
Hyde Hall Covered Bridge. It's a truly wonderful state park to
explore during this caching day!
