Good luck! :D
The origin of Mestre is unknown, but somebody would to give it a
mythological beginning, as founded by Mesthles, a hero
fugitive from Troy. However, the first "true" historical mention of
the city date from 994 AD, when the Holy Roman Emperor Otto III
(980–1002 AD) offered some territories of Mestre at the Count
of Treviso. In 1153 the Pope Eugene III appointed the bishop of
Treviso as lord of Mestre, citing the existence of the church of
St. Lawrence, a port and a castle (Castelvecchio). In the XIII
century, Ezzelino III da Romano, a feudal lord in the March of
Treviso, devastated the territory of Mestre and in 1245 he
conquered the castle. This bloody domination lasted in 1250, when
the brother of Ezzelino, Alberico da Romano, took the possession of
the city. In 1274 the castle was devastated by a fire, but a new
castle (Castelnuovo, see waypoint 1 and 2) was built
in the 1317, when Treviso reinforced the defenses against the
attacks of Scaligers, the Lords of Verona. No traces remain today
of the old castle. In 1323, the Scaligers conquered Mestre and
Treviso. To prevent an excessive power of Scaligers in the
mainland, in 1337 the Venetians conquered the territory of Mestre
and their castle. This is an intense commercial age, evidenced by
an artificial channel (the Canal Salso), built to facilitate the
transport of goods between Mestre and Venice. During the War of the
League of Cambrai (1509), the Venetian forces retreating after the
defeat at the Battle of Agnadello, walled in the castle of Mestre,
who became the last Venetian stronghold from Holy Roman Empire. In
1513 Mestre had to face again to the assault of the French, who are
well rejected. In honor of heroic resistance, Venice gave the title
“Mestre fidelissima” (faithful Mestre), which today is
its motto. In the XVIII century, the surrounding walls of the
Castelnuovo were torn down. Today, you can see only one of the
original 11 tower of this ancient fortification, the Clock
Tower, see waypoint 2. In 1797, after the fall of Venetian
Republic, Mestre was overcome by Napoleon. In 1808 Mestre
constituted a free commune, following the French practice. In 1814
Mestre followed the Venetian fate, falling into the
Austro-Hungarian Empire domination. During the revolutions of
1848-1849 (Italian "Risorgimento"), the people of Mestre hardly
fighted against the Austro-Hungarian Empire, taking part in several
heroic events. I would to remeber the event called "la Sortita"
(October 27, 1848), when some citizens of Mestre, walled into a
fort near Marghera, decided to groped a surprise attack against the
Austrian garrison, occuping the center of Mestre. This operation,
under the command of General Pepe, was successful, and the
Austrians were forced to retreat to Treviso. In this bloody battle
died the Neapolitan poet Alessandro Poerio, being a
hero. Today, Mestre remeber Poerio with a street in the city center
(waypoint 3). Unfortunately, the Austrians win backed Mestre and
Venice in 1849, until the 1866, when the area passed under the
Reign of Italy. In the 1867 Giuseppe Garibaldi came
in Mestre, pleading the public from a balcony in the central Place,
an event commemorated by a memorial in the modern Piazza Ferretto
(see waypoint 4). In the 1960s and 1970s Mestre experienced a huge
demographic growth due to the presence of the Industrial area of
Porto Marghera. Today, Mestre count approximatively 180,000
inhabitants, being the most popolous city in the Veneto.

:D
Durante i moti
austriache accampate a Mestre.
forze austriache furono costrette a ritirarsi vero Treviso.
Veneto. Oggi Mestre conta circa 180000 abitanti.
Un grande ringraziamento ai co-owners
