Geocache Description:

I have placed this cache so that it can be a part of a walk from chizu’s GCZQFB Border Boulder to dunk090’s GC1P5XJ Borestane, a walk that I highly recommend. The trails can be boggy, so appropriate footwear is essential.

Please keep in mind that the reservoir is a wildlife conservation area, and therefore, dogs must be kept on a lead within the reservoir boundaries.

A small reservoir in the Pentland Hills, the North Esk Reservoir lies on the boundary of Midlothian and the Scottish Borders. This reservoir receives several streams, including the Gutterford Burn and Henshaw Burn and is the source of the River North Esk.
The reservoir was built by Penicuik mill owners in 1850 to help regulate the flow of water in the river to give a constant supply to the numerous paper mills which had sprung up in the valley. The engineer responsible was Thomas Stevenson, father of Robert Louis Stevenson. As the mills closed down, the last one to close only in 2004, the reservoir became a wildlife sanctuary. Many waterfowl and marshland birds now make use of this area.
