Forgotten Past - Utopia Army Camp Traditional Cache
forestfauna: Finally had a chance to check on this. Container is gone. It looks like the entire area has been harvested. I removed the last of the geo-litter (hook and rope). I like the area and history, so I will try to find a way to restart this one.

DIRECTIONS.
From route 1 heading towards St. Stephen, take the exit at Pennfield towards Lake Utopia (route 785). After going up the long hill, look to the right for a road just before a Christmas Tree farm, called “Alex Jack Detour”. Take this road until you come to route 780 and then take right on this road. Stay on the pavement until you reach your destination. Or, instead of going on the Alex Jack Detour, continue up the road until you reach a 4-way intersection with route 780, turn right and stay on the pavement the whole way.
Heading towards Saint John from St. Stephen, at the final St. George exit near Tim Horton’s, take the exit and head left on route 780. Stay on route 780 right to the end.
The cache itself is located on what remains of the old Utopia Army Camp, A-30 Canadian Infantry Training Centre. This training camp was active for 4 years from August 1942 until April 1946. The buildings remained for another decade before being demolished in the 1950s. The terrain and topography made the area ideally suited for training purposes. Administration buildings, barracks, mess halls, motor transport garages, were all housed here. What you see here, along with remnants of bunkers and buildings in the blueberry fields surrounding this pine plantation, are all that remains of this time in history.
Be careful when walking around this area, as there are some old boards, broken cement, etc. I almost stepped into what would likely have been a latrine or ditch near the road.
