Geocache Description:

This place was originally known as Buckley’s Crossing after Edward Buckley who had moved into the area in 1832. The name of the town was changed to Barnes Crossing when a man named Barnes moved into the area in 1848. It was the only safe crossing of the Snowy River. The town is now known as Dalgety.

Historic Dalgety, on the Banks of the Snowy River was once an important river crossing along a stock route from Gippsland to the Snowy Mountains High Country dating back to the 1840's.

It was known as a friendly meeting place for the Aborigines of the South East as they made their way up to the High Country in pursuit of the Bogong Moths, a delicacy of theirs. They would wait many weeks for the water level to drop after the spring thaw before crossing and heading for the high country.

Dalgety was gazetted as the site of the Nation's Capital, missing out due to its close proximity to Victoria. Situated on the Monaro Plains and in the rain shadow of the Snowy Mountains, Dalgety is a relatively dry area of rolling hills with granite boulders scattered across the landscape and is quite a contrast to the forests of the Mountains and the South Coast.

The cache hides in a Dalgety icon, it contains some additional information about this wonderful town and the usual range of swaps.
