Geocache Description:

On Route 16, between Stratton and Rangeley.

IAMPAW wants to see a moose and take a photo of one. She has seen moose before but wants more and is unhappy she didn't see one the last time she was here. So this cache is for her.

First we need to review the rules for moose watching. You rarely see a moose in the winter. When the muck gets thick and juicy along the roadsides and the succulent weeds start to grow, moose tend to go there to eat, a change of diet from too many spruce tips in the winter. They also like any road salt that may be there. Just like people, they eat three meals a day, breakfast just at daybreak, lunch at noon (although they don't come out along the roads as much at noon), and dinner just before dark. So early morning (very early) and late evening are the best times to see them. Don't let it be too dark, it's easy not to see a dark brown moose at night and they tend to run across the road right in front of you, as many people have found out to their sorrow. Drive slowly. Route 16 from Stratton to Rangeley is one of the state's "Moose Alleys". May, June and July are probably the best viewing months. Do NOT get between a cow and it's calf. Don't get too up-close and personal with a bull during the rut (early September through mid-October), they can be irritable. Other than that, they're pretty much gentle creatures.

This cache is placed in a very moosey area. Drive down the short road, park about 100' from the cache, take the short walk down a skidder trail: some muck when it's wet, moose tracks, moose poop, not too bad. The cache is full of moosey things so please trade in kind if possible. If not, I'll understand... If you don't meet a moose there, go back to Route 16 and cruise up and down, slowly. Good moose viewing just before and after where this cache is placed. Good luck! And happy moosing!

The cache is a small Lock and Lock container. Please cover it completely. Just to the left of where you will park, there is a pile of very clean bones, probably deer. Good for kids and others who may like to collect bones.
