Sights of Manchester – Manchester Central Traditional Cache
CardioCache: I'll move this on at the weekend. I think it's being "muggled" by security staff, so I’ll relocate it to an alternative place I have in mind.

This Cache is part of the “Sights of Manchester” series intended to demonstrate some of Manchester’s interesting buildings and features.
This Cache is located at the Manchester Central convention centre formally known as GMEX. The exhibition centre occupies the now disused Manchester Central Railway Station. Building of the station began in 1875 by the Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC). It took 5 years to build, officially opening on the 1st of July 1880. The engineers responsible were Richard Johnson, Andrew Johnston and Charles Sacré. It is a fantastic example of the phenomenal potential of Victorian engineering. The train shed is covered by a single-span arched roof constructed of wrought iron. It is 210 feet (64 m) wide, 550 feet (168 m) long, and at its highest point is 90 feet (27 m) high. The roof was constructed by Andrew Handyside and Co, whilst the substructure and masonry were provided by Robert Neill and Sons of Manchester.
In its hey-day, the station had over 400 arrivals and departures per day. However, on the 5th May 1969, it closed as a railway station, but was spared demolition after being granted grade II listed building status 6 years prior. After a period of use as a car park (a somewhat unfitting role for such a building) it was acquired by Greater Manchester Council in 1978 and one of the UK’s first urban regeneration projects was begun. On the 21st March 1986, Her Majesty The Queen formally opened the Greater Manchester Exhibition and Event Centre (GMEX). Although other the years, its identity changed and the site expanded (for example by the addition of the Manchester International Convention Centre (MICC) in 2001), it remained one of country’s largest event centres, with the roof over the open 10000 square meter, pillar-less space being held up by sheer Victorian engineering. In January 2007, the GMEX and MICC joined forces, and the centre became known as Manchester Central; regaining its original title.
This cache is located at the front of Manchester Central. It does get busy, but should be fairly easy to get without being noticed. Wishing you all the best with your hunting. DG + CS
