Geocache Description:

Located above Mule Hoof Bend in the Salt River canvon area. Take Hwy 60 toward Show Low Take FR1302 at Seneca Lake - go beyond dam toward Seneca Falls turn left before falls to FR473

You must cross the San Carlos Apache Reservation to reach cache.
In 1914 asbestos was descovered in this area and became what is known as the Crysotile Mine (still privately owned). World War I brought a boom in the asbestos mining industry.
A man named Guy Phillips worked at the Crysotile claim in later years and in his spare time he and a partner prospected farther north in the Salt River Canyon area and established several claims of their own. Most of their claims produced very low grade asbestos and were not commercially viable. At one point the partner decided the the claims were not going to pay off so he sold his half to Phillips.
Phillips soon found what he was looking for. WWII and the asbestos industry made Phillips rich beyond his wildest dreams. He located and worked several well paying claims. He estabished a community in the area of the mines some called Mule Hoof Camp ( N 33.47.410 W 110.32.795)
Guy Phillips was murdered in 1962 at his home at the camp. The Gila County sheriff suspected his wife and she was tried twice for the crime but was never convicted. The mystery surrounds his death to this day.
The mines in this area were in production until the early 1970's when asbestos became linked to the big "C"
The cache is located at a mine site known as the Grand View. You should park your vehicle at N 33.46.946 W 110.32.036. The walk is an easy one - to the left is a foot trail and to the right is a narrow road. Leave your children at home, both trails are wide enough but the area has steep and sharp drop offs on the down hill side of the trails. When you reach the site of the cache look down into Salt River Canyon and you will see Mule Hoof Bend.
These are inactive mine areas and you should not enter any drifts or caves where dead air or cave ins are possible.
Please leave these areas as they are.
