Geocache Description:

The geocache hidden at the posted coordinates is a regular geocache that is part of the Enchanted Mountains Geo Trail (EMGT). This trail is a project of Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning & Tourism and the Enchanted Mountains of Cattaraugus County. It has been developed to encourage visiting cachers and residents to explore the hidden parts of Cattaraugus County as they travel the highways and byways of the Enchanted Mountains.

On the inside cover of each cache is a KEYWORD that you will need to record in your EMGT leaflet. You can obtain your Town wooden nickel by mailing your EMGT leaflet to the department listed on it or by visiting the website at http://enchantedmountains.com/geotrail/

At the age of 18, Cornplanter became chief of the Seneca Nation and invited The Religious Society of Friends or the “Quakers” to come and establish a mission school on the Allegany Reservation. In 1798 they did so and called it “Genesingutha”. As often occurs, with many supervisors and views on how to do something – it did not work out.

In the year 1803, the Quakers bought a 464 acre piece of property just off the reservation and opened a farm and boarding school called Tunesassa (means fine gravel and is the Seneca name for Quaker Run) or “The Friends Indian School”. The boarding school housed between 40 and 50 Seneca Children for 20 week terms each year. This school included a working farm, sawmill, gristmill, tannery, blacksmith shop and other workshops where the students learned a trade along with their half day of classroom study. It operated from 1852 until 1938 when the NYS Department of Education closed and sold the school. The Friends remained here until the mid 1960’s when the Kinzua Dam Project created the Allegany Reservoir and flooded the site.

In 1987 the NYS Parks Department built the Friends Boat Launch.

It may be necessary to park outside the launch area during the off season or during the high season to avoid paying the entry fee, if the gate is closed or staffed, you will need to walk a little further. Please do not block the gate or the driveway in or out of the area.

This cache is permit #ALL197 for ASP.
