Geocache Description:

The Grant County Fair celebrated its 100th fair in August 2009. This "hunt" was organized in recognition of this special fair. Even though the fair is now history and planning is under way for the 101 th fair, this exciting adventure in Grant county is still available for geocachers. Participants will find this area to be quite beautiful and well worth the trip to Grant county.

We had 100 commemorative geocoins made in recognition of the 100th fair; we have 20+ remaining.

This event consists of 20 virtual caches throughout Grant county. These caches focus on the historical, geological and natural beauty features of the area. These features have been around for years and I capitalized on their presence. These are not temporary geocaches.

Participants in this event will travel back roads of the county, view prime ranch land with abundant livestock. The scenic John Day river and national forest provide recreational opportunities for local residents as well as hundreds from across Oregon who value the beauty of Eastern Oregon.

Several small towns will be on your route and will provide a history of the people and natural resources in Grant county. The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument provides geological beauty, history and educational opportunity and will leave a lasting memory.

The 1800"s saw Grant county grow as a result of the discovery of gold. The Chinese people played an important role in the mining of gold and their culture is visible with the famous Kam Wah Chung museum in John Day. This museum provides a glimpse into the Chinese herbal medicine practice which was available in Grant county and utilized by people from Seattle to San Francisco.

This is a very family friendly and educational event and we encourage families and all level of geocachers. All caches sites are on paved roads which are maintained during winter.

IF YOU COULD DROP ME AN EMAIL TELLING HOW MUCH MONEY YOU SPENT IN THE COUNTY I WOULD APPRECIATE IT. WE WANT TO SHOW THE COMMUNITY THAT GEOCACHING IS A GOOD FAMILY SPORT AND ALSO BRINGS MONEY INTO THE COMMUNITY. THANKS, HAPPY HUNTING.,
