Geocache Description:

It's a cool puzzle cache in a cool location! And, it's Kosher!

A cache at the Hirsch Community Jewish Cemetery is long overdue. So here it is!

The cache is not at the posted coordinates.

The Baron De Hirsch Institute and the Jewish Colonization Association assisted Jewish people immigrate to the Hirsch area of Saskatchewan. This cemetery is now a cultural heritage site. No new burials are permitted here now, but it is still a fascinating testimony to piece of Prairie Heritage. Check out the related web page link for more information.

To find this Kosher Cache, you must go to the above posted coordinates. They will take you to the Hirsch Community Jewish Cemetery site. Once there, you will need to put on your decryption hat. By that I mean that the actual cache coordinates are found on the grave markers in the cemetery. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, to make this more interesting, the coordinates are in Hebrew. I took Hebrew 100 in University so this was cinchy! But for the non-Hebrew language scholar, I have included a handy little chart that shows you what the number values are for Hebrew letters. I highly recommend printing this chart out and bringing it with you to the cache site - unless you actually know Hebrew.

This is how it works. You must find the grave marker identified by the listed English Name. Then, using the formula below, you need to find the listed Hebrew character and translate it into it's Numerical equivalent. Hebrew is read from right to left, top to bottom. As such, all of the Hebrew characters can be located by counting from top to bottom and from right to left. Include all punctuation marks in your counting.

Because I am merciful and gracious, I gave given you some freebies in the actual coordinates. For the rest, follow these instructions and you will be on your way to finding the Kosher Cache!

N 49º A0.BCD W 102º EF.GHI
  • A = Blima Greenberg, 2nd line from the top, 1st character on the right
  • B = Ida Muscovitch, 1st line, 9th from right
  • C = Sarah Fanny Zelickson, 2nd line from the top, 6th from right
  • D = Dave Sternberg, 3rd line from the top, 11th from right
  • E = Hoffer, 6th line from the top, 7th from right
  • F = Sam Adler, 2nd line from the top, 4th from right
  • G = Annie Sair, 2nd line from the top, 13th from right
  • H = Rebecca Dubisky, 3rd line from the top, 1st on right
  • I = Ida Polansky, 3rd line from top, 4th from right

So that's it! Once you have located all the numbers, pop them into your GPSr and find the Kosher Cache! If this one leaves you saying 'Oy Vey!' message me and I will give you some guidance.

Like any cemetery, please use the utmost respect while you are visiting.

Congratulations to retrogirl 1977 & Yoyo Man on the FTF! Also for taking cool baby fox video at the cache site! I thought I would add the YouTube video link here: Fox Cub Video
