Geocache Description:

The Old City Baths

This cache takes you to the original site of the city baths. They were the old salt water baths near where the History House is now, with water pumped up from Lady Bay from a pipeline alongside a jetty, which was about 100 meters west of the surf club. The old pool was only about 20 meters long and it wasn’t very hygienic. It wasn’t chlorinated. They used to throw lime into it. Although generations of children learned to swim there in the Herald Learn to Swim campaign, safety concerns ultimately rendered the pool unhygienic. There’d be kids swimming and splashing and the water would go milky when they stirred up the lime. You are able to still see the remains of the circumference of the pool, which is quite small compared to the modern 50M pool of today which opened in 1962. The coordinates above should find you in the car park, usually empty on weekends. From there you will see a railway crossing with a closed gate. Your starting point is at the sign on the gate reading “PRIOR TO OPENING GATE” etc. From there enter the distance of 60 Metres and a mag bearing of 096 (East) The cache is a small tablet container with log and pencil. Please watch out for muggles around here and replace well. After finding the cache you are able to walk beyond the gate and follow the track around the lake, well worth the walk on a nice day. Have fun and enjoy the day.
