Crazy Pirate's Search for Nifong Treasure Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Crazy Armadillo: There seems to be a little too much mischief going on in the area right now. Last month the barn was burnt down, and now this... And I can't report that one had anything to do with another, but there was evidence of a small campfire within 30 feet of the cache. It's really sad that people can't just join in our game or leave it to the ones who really want to play. We're going to shut this one down, until we find a better place to hide it.

Geocache Description:

The cache is located in Nifong Park on the south side of Columbia. Your looking for a regular sized ammo box approximately 5 minutes from the parking area. Follow the hard packed, well worn path, and the cache is about 20 feet off the trail. Slight bushwacking maybe be required.

We couldn’t believe that someone hasn’t placed a cache here before! Nifong park really is one of those places that has a little “treasure” to offer everyone. Are you a History buff? One of the main things at the park is the Walters-Boone County Historical Museum. To the north of the museum is the home of Dr. Frank G. Nifong known as the Maplewood Home. It was originally built in 1877by two Boone County pioneers: Slater Ensor Lenoir and his wife Margaret Bradford Lenoir. Dr. Nifong married their daughter Lavinia, and the four of them were the only people to ever live in this home. Maplewood was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. To the south of the museum is a historical village known as Boone Junction. There is what is thought to be the oldest surviving log structure in Boone County. It was built around 1821 by David Gordon, Sr. for his family while their plantation style home was being built. It was later used to house his slaves. Built in 1890 on the banks of the Missouri River, another small building is the Easley Country store which provided services to the small community for over 100 years. I read another possible addition for Boone Junction is a folk Victorian Queen-Anne decorated house built by William Ryland. From Memorial Day through September there are regular tours scheduled for these historical buildings. Are you more interested in spending a relaxing afternoon out with the family? One of the outer buildings of the Maplewood home is a big red barn where the animals and their feed were housed. Now days it is used by the Maplewood Community Theater for outdoor plays. Another red and white striped barn houses a petting zoo with cattle, hogs, geese, sheep, goats and other farm animals. There are plenty of picnic sites with tables, a couple of BBQ grills, and bathrooms nearby. On the south side of the park is a reservable shelter and a grass volleyball court. Are you moreinterested in the connecting with nature? There is a recently renovated fishing lake, and a 1.3 mile walking/hiking trail. There is no need to disturb the historical buildings or go into the museum to find the cache. Please be respectful of the Columbia Park Department hours: open 6 A.M. to 11 P.M. Permission has been granted by Columbia Parks and Recreation Department.

NOTICE: Please be respectful of the posted park hours. If you enter the park after hours you are trespassing. If you are stopped you can be ticketed or arrested and will put the future of geocaching in the parks in jeopardy
