Geocache Description:

A cache by a wooden bridge on the cycle route from Doune to Dunblane following the course of the old railway.

Caches along the cycle route can be done along with some of the Red Kite Trail caches.

This is a pleasant walk following the route of the old railway. The path is tarmac and fenced on both sides so suitable for wheelchairs, buggies and cycling. It is an ideal walk for families and great for dog walking.

The railway was first opened in 1858 and as a single line ran from Dunblane, to Callander and Killin. In 1902 the track was converted to double line, and a large impressive station was built at Doune. The scale of the station was in part due to the fact that Sir James Thompson, chairman of the Caledonian Railway, lived in nearby Inverardoch House. The line ceased to operate in October 1965 as a result of the 'Beeching rationalisation of the railways'.

As you approach this cache you can see the Doune off road motorcycle track. On summer evenings and at weekends you can hear the bikes before you see them.

This cache is located close to a wooden bridge. We think this bridge is a new addition replacing an older stone bridge. When you see the bridge and try to imagine trains rattling over it you'll see what we mean.
