Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series in which I have placed caches at the four extremities of the Isle of Man mainland. If you manage to find all four of them, then you will have obtained the coordinates (from labels under each of the cache container's lids) to a bonus cache near to the geograpical centre of the Island.

Congratulations to Monstermunch, who was the first to complete the series on the 3rd of June 2009

The most southerly point on the Isle of Man mainland can be found at Dreswick Point at the end of Langness peninsular. Please see NORTH, WEST, EAST and CENTRE for the others in the series.

.

Langness (Manx: Langlish) is a peninsula which protrudes from the south eastern extremity of the Isle of Man. Signifying a cape or extended promontory, Langness literally means "long promontory" in Old Norse. At one time an island, Langness was eventually joined to the mainland by the movement and deposition of material along Castletown Bay to form a tombolo (a sand bar connecting an island to the mainland or to another island). The small community of Derbyhaven is situated on this strip of land which lies close to Castletown. The beach is officially the cleanest on the Island (according to the Marine Conservation Society's Good Beach Guide), with the water quality being described as being excellent.

At the southern tip of the peninsula is Dreswick Point, the southeastern-most point of the Manx mainland, whilst St. Michael's Isle (popularly known as Fort Island) is connected at the northern end of the peninsula by a narrow causeway. The Castletown Golf and Country Club (also a hotel) is set on the peninsula and the land connecting it with Derbyhaven and has been the scene of many international championships. Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson owns a series of cottages by the lighthouse; ... but don't mention that to PROWL (Public Rights of Way Langness).

By the way, if you were to travel directly south from the location of the cache, you would next meet land in Holyhead Harbour on the Island of Anglesey in Wales. On a clear day, you should easily be able to see Snowdon (Welsh: Yr Wyddfa), the highest mountain in Wales at 3,406 feet, which has been described as "probably the busiest mountain in Britain".

The cache is a small clip 'n seal box with a geocaching sticker on the top and originally contained a few small swaps and a travel bug, plus the usual log-book (including the "what-is-geocaching" blurb) and a pencil. Parking is available at the carpark on the Langness peninsular (see coordinates below). The nearest bus stop is at Janet's Corner in Castletown. Please replace the cache exactly as found, and as usual, WATCH OUT FOR MUGGLES!

Langness peninsular is an area of outstanding beauty. Enjoy it ... and Happy caching!
