Geocache Description:

This is what I hope will be the first in a series of caches aimed at highlighting some of the hidden gems in the Cognashene cottaging area. The Cognashene Church on the Rocks just had to be my first cache!

UPDATE: I've been contacted by several intrepid cachers who were hoping to reach the cache by canoe. Although I admire your drive, this cache requires a powered boat to reach. The nearest boat launch (and the nearest road) is in Honey Harbour, nearly 40 minutes by speedboat from the Freddy Channel. I'll try to make the next one more accessible!

From the Cognashene Cottagers Association Website:

"The Cognashene Community Church was established in 1906 when local cottagers began to hold Sunday worship services at various cottages through the summer season.

The church moved to its permanent site in the late 1950’s when Louis and Sara Breithaupt donated the land on the Freddy Channel. More recently an adjacent lot has been acquired and developed as a memorial garden for many former cottagers. Besides worship on Sundays, and some weddings, the site is used for community events such as the CCA annual meeting and craft and boating classes."

The church is out in the open - a rocky rise where cottagers gather on Sundays to sit together in the sun. There is a small covered pulpit, a storage shed, some planters - the rest was left as natural as possible.

A stone memorial wall was recently added where brass plaques are placed to commemorate cottagers who have passed on.

This is a great place to stop for a quiet picnic in a beautiful area. I chose to give it a 1/5 because you must have a boat to reach it, but once there, docks and boardwalks will get you around.

The Freddy Channel is navigable by some large boats, but there are underwater hazards so be cautious if your boat drafts four feet or more. You might do better to anchor at the mouth of the channel and enjoy a paddle to the site- should be less than 15 minutes in a canoe or kayak.

The cache container is a camo-taped tupperware with logbook, pencil and fun-in-the-sun themed trade items - Canada Day buttons, shells, colourful fish doodads, etc. I've included a small etched glass globe for the First to Find.
