This particular squirrel, and some of its cohorts, have learned how to raid a "squirrel Proof" feeder by sitting on the trap door that shuts off the feed trough then sticking a "finger" behind it to scoop out the seed through a very narrow slot. They're being taken for a longer ride than usual. I thought I had the problem solved, but they always seem to come up with new ways to empty the feeders.
This is one of the places that I release the squirrels that raid my bird feeders. I use a live trap baited with peanut butter right underneath the feeder post. If the little beasties leave the feeders alone, I leave them alone. If they attempt to raid the feeders, they come close enough to smell the irresistable aroma of the bait and the trap door traps them. I check the cage through a window. When I see the trap sprung, I load them into the Jeep and "Take them for a ride". A towel over the cage keeps them from getting too overwrought. Upon reaching one of my release points, I pull off the road, remove the cage, open it up, and "away we go"!
They only suffer a little psychological trauma but if they're going to return, they've a long trek. They're several miles from "home" and must cross a super highway and a swamp to get here. Generally, there are plenty of others who move in and take over the territory. Thus far I've trapped 35 of them (plus four possums,a raccoon and two greedy doves).
Update: As of 10/09/10 the cache was a regular as per the logs. In between then and 12/26/11 (2 DNFs listed during that time) someone replaced the cache with a micro. If you go through the logs you can see this. Changing the size to micro.
