Geocache Description:

FINAL CACH IS NOT AT POSTED CORDINATES

HISTORYIn October 1827, Patrick O'Meara, a peddler on his way from Dodgeville to Galena, accidentally discovered lead along the banks of the nearby creek. The creek is now named peddler's creek. Word spread. A log hut settlement, known as Peddler's Creek, sprang up. Extended westward, spreading out like a T up and down the valley. 1834, made memorable by the influx of miners, prospectors, fortune hunters, and visitors to this area, saw the establishment of the Methodist Episcopal Church, with prayer meetings held in the home of Wm. Heathcock. In 1836 Heathcock and Michael Poad erected a log church near this cemetery. Victims of disease, epidemic, sudden death, violence, and high infant mortality all found their final rest in this rocky slope. This cemetery served the area from the mid 1830's to civil war times.
