Jackass Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ROTSIP: This cache appears to have a problem and might be gone, and it seems unlikely that the problem will be addressed or that it will be replaced soon, because the CO has been inactive for more than 2 years, (from the day that he logged an Owner Maintenance log and undertook to replace it) so I am archiving it.
If the cache is repaired or replaced, then please send an e-mail to us, stating the name and GC number of the cache, and request that the listing be unarchived. If the listing complies with the guidelines at that time, we will be happy to unarchive it for you.
Thank you for the past fun.

Geocache Description:

Seaside cache in Betty's Bay named for the African Jackass Penguin, near to one of only three mainland nesting sites of this striking bird. Perfect for an excursion: Visit the historic whailing station and penguin reserve, where you can get close to and learn about penguins and other sea life, and then take a stroll along the coast to find the cache.

NB - the cache has been moved from it's original location to a spot with less potential environmental impact.

Convenient parking can be found at the old whaling station at S34 22.284 E18 53.563, from where the penguin reserve (entrance at S34 22.365 E18 53.631) is obvious and easily accessible. The reserve is fenced off and charges an entrance fee but is the best place to see the penguins and other life. NB: The cache is NOT within the reserve. After enjoying the wildlife, walk along the shore to the cache location.

Along the way enjoy the stunning views, flowers and wildlife. You should spot dassies (Rock hyrax), gulls, cormorants and possibly more Jackass Penguins along the way. In season you can often see whales (now safe from hunting!). Please remember that this is a wilderness area and try to minimise impact. CITO!
