Beds
If you ever saw a bus going through town with "Filter Beds" on the
front, and wondered where that is...
The Fillter Beds site forms a local landmark in the Glenavy and
Stoneyford area. It is a giant filtration plant for drinking water.
The six enormous beds resemble very large swimming pools, which are
clearly visible on Google's satellite view despite the fact that
this region is covered by very low definition satellite
images.
The plant run by NI Water no longer seems to make use of the beds
(which you can view only from the road outside the high fence)
since the new building to the right of the site was erected a few
years back.
Parking:
The grass verges on both sides of the road here are wide enough and
hard enough to park on. As the bus I mentioned above turns here and
heads back to Lisburn, sometimes there are people waiting in cars
around here to pick up passengers arriving by bus.
The Cache:
It is on the other side of the road from the NI Water Plant. It is a
green bison tube about the size of a film canister containing logs.
Bring your own pen. It is a 'cache and dash' that should be easy to
find. Please take care when crossing this road.
