This is a 5-stage multi-cache located in the east side of the
Bishop Cap Hills. It takes place mainly on ridges as well as some
vegetated desert and some roads/trails. The various stages should
help you establish a route for the hike. It is a loop so there will
be no need to retrace your route back. Each of the stages 1-4 is a
matchstick container hidden at or near the base of a fairly large
desert plant/bush/tree and the final is an ammo can hidden in the
rocks. The total distance for the hike is ~3.5m and total elevation
gain is ~1300'.
The road shown on Google Maps near stage 1 is not there. The actual
road can be reached by taking the Vado exit off of I-10 and heading
east on High Valley Road. Eventually the road turns to the north
and becomes Santana Road. Continue on this road past the "Dead End"
and follow it all the way to the parking area. (I've included a
couple extra waypoints to help you stay on the road.) A
high-clearance vehicle is recommended due to ruts in the road but I
was able to make it in my Honda Civic.
Be careful near the first stage and final stage--dropoffs nearby.
The adventurous may want to bring a flashlight although it is not
required to find any of the stages. If you just can't get enough,
here are a couple more points of interest: N 32° 11.776 W 106°
35.304 and N 32° 11.598 W 106° 35.778. Don't be scared if you hear
explosions as Doña Ana Range Camp is nearby. Have fun and don't
wear shorts or sandals--unless you're Mule Ears :)
