Geocache Description:

The Cache is a small-medium size plastic container. Please be careful of the plants near the cache. And please re-hide in the same place to keep the coordinates accurate.

This cache is dedicated to that sweet, little, purple berry – the Saskatoon – or as the Cree would call it – Missaskatoomina.

While these berries are small they are definitely mighty. Able to grow in a variety of soil and withstand extreme weather such as drought and freezing winters, the Saskatoon was often the only fruit and source of vitamins to people living in the prairies in earlier years. North American Indian people used saskatoons to make Pemmican – mixing it with dried meat and melted fat. It was then molded into cakes which would keep for months, being one of their staple foods during the winter. Today saskatoons are used in a wide variety of ways from pies, jams, jellies, syrups ice cream toppings, wine, and liqueurs.

Down the road from this cache is a place where you can pick Saskatoon Berries (mid July - mid August) or just stop in for a piece of pie.

My favourite Saskatoon Berry recipe:

SASKATOON BERRY RHUBARB CRUMBLE
1 cup - Flour
1 cup - Oats
1 cup - lightly packed Brown Sugar
3 cups - Saskatoon Berries
1 cup - Rhubarb
½ cup – Butter
1 tbsp – Almond extract

Put Saskatoon Berries and Rhubarb in a bowl and stir in almond extract. Add a couple tbsp of flour in with the fruit, toss till coated. In a separate bowl, mix flour, oats, brown sugar. Cut in margarine, mix with hands. If it’s not going to be sweet add tbsp of sugar. Put the berry mixture on the bottom of a square baking dish. Pack the dry mixture on top. Bake at 350 for 35-40 min.
