An easy drive-by cache commemorating one of the important early links in West Coast travel. You can park within 10m of the cache.
Scott’s Ferry was a vital part of the transport system on the lower West Coast of the North Island in pioneer days, providing part of the link between Wellington and Whanganui. It carried stock, produce, passengers and coaches on the coastal route.
Mailman Thomas Scott took over the ferry in 1849 from the first owner, and operated it until his death in 1892. His wife Anne managed the general store and hotel associated with the ferry.
In 1863, Scott’s Ferry became the focus of the murder enquiry of one Walter Tricker. He was accused, tried and convicted of the murder of a local farmer, but the local community was unconvinced of his guilt. Over a number of years they campaigned for a retrial, which when granted showed major flaws. It was however, 1891 before he was granted a full pardon. His descendants still farm the area today.
The ferry became unworkable after the devastating 1897 floods, but was restored and continued until 1907; the barge was then moved to Whanganui, where it operated on the river for many years. It then lay derelict on the riverbank until being rescued and restored to its present position as a tribute to the early pioneers of the district.
