Geocache Description:

This is our first hide. You will want a camera, a good four wheel drive vehicle, or some hiking boots to get to it. It is located at one of our favorite places to go for an excellent panoramic view of the Baker valley.

From Haines, take the Haines Dump road East out of town. This immediately turns to a dirt road. Turn North (left) and continue past the historic lone grave site of Nathaniel Hamlin (1818-1889), who had the silver mine near the top of Coyote peak. His father was vice president to Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865). Look West and see the old granite quary (NW Granite Company, 1903-1960), which still boasts it's old cables and timbers. If you happened to stop in at the Haines general store, you may have noticed that it is constructed entirely from granite blocks which were quaried at this location. Continue just past the entrance to the Haines dump, and turn East (right) onto Coyote Peak Lane. Cross the cattle guard. If you are hiking, take the first right (Southish) and park near a large boulder. Hike up the old jeep trail (which is too steep for driving) to the top. If you are driving up, take the second right and drive (carefully) to the top. Be sure you have good tires, 4wd and plenty of clearance. There is a pit at the top of this hill which you will skirt around.

From the top you will see the historic town of Haines, "The Biggest Little City In Oregon," which is at the foot of this hill. The powder river winds its way through the pastures, meadows and farmland, and the valley is framed by the Elkhorn Mountains to the West, and the Eagle Cap Mountains to the East.

The original contents of this geocache are one trackable geocoin, log book, pen, and multiple swag items. You are looking for a round tin.
