Geocache Description:

Cache is a modified mint container located in the Arboretum area of the Indiana University campus.

Located just off of 10th Street, bordered to the west by the HPER building and to the east by the Main Library is the tranquil greenspace known as the IU Arboretum. What many students and visitors to the area do not realize is that this very same space played host to a lot of IU history during its existence as the University's first Memorial Stadium . . .

Dedicated on November 21, 1925, Memorial Stadium was named for the 2800 students who served (and 52 who lost their lives) in the First World War. On this same date, IU's first football homecoming game was played against the Purdue Boilermakers, beginning the Old Oaken Bucket rivalry that remains with us today (incidentally, that first game ended in a tie).

The Stadium went on to host many more football games, including those played by the 1945 Big Ten Champion Hoosiers, who went undefeated (the first and last IU team to do so). The last game was played in the fall of 1959, due to the new stadium being built on 17th Street.

The Stadium also hosted the first Little 500 Bicycle Race (the basis of the "World's Greatest College Weekend") on May 12th, 1951 and continued the tradition until 1980. It was this stadium that was featured in the 1979 film 'Breaking Away,' which was nominated for Best Picture in 1980 and won the Oscar for Best Screenplay (by Steve Tesich).

A clip to the trailer for 'Breaking Away,' which showcased many Bloomington locations, can be found here:

Unfortunately, the stadium (renamed 10th Street Stadium in 1971) fell into disrepair, and was ultimately razed in 1982. Remnants are still present today, however, including two stone towers, a wrought iron fence and three ticket booths.

Come and find this cache in the Arboretum- and take a stroll down IU's Memory Lane . . .
