Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the South Dakota Air and Space Museum and is placed with the permission of the museum. This cache allows you to learn a little information about each aircraft while you find your way to the final cache. This is a good companion cache to “SD Air and Space--Cracking the Sound Barrier” cache and can be completed simultaneously.

The South Dakota Air and Space Museum is FREE TO THE PUBLIC and is open daily from 8:30 to 4:30 year-round. I have noticed some days in the winter the museum is not open so you might want to call first in the off season. Phone: 385-5188

The given coordinates take you to the gate of the museum.

The cache has a log book only. Bring your own pen. No trade items.

The final cache is located at:

N 44 AB CDE
W 103 AF FIL

You DO NOT need to touch the aircraft to find the cache.

First to Find take the FTF ticket to the museum desk to redeem you prize….donated by the SD Air and Space Museum.

All aircraft are designated with a “tail” number. Use the clues below to identify each aircraft. Unless otherwise specified, the last digit of the aircraft tail number is used to derive the final coordinates of the cache. All information you need to solve the clues is on the plaque in front of the aircraft.

A: This pilot trainer was developed from the single-seat F-80 fighter.

B: This aircraft primarily flew aggressor missions against the North American continent.

C: 4,400 of this aircraft were built as medium attack bombers but the one on display here was converted to a personal transport for Eisenhower.

D: This aircraft was used for support duties at the Minuteman Missile sites at Ellsworth Air Force Base.

E: This aircraft is currently stationed at Ellsworth AFB and was first used in combat in Operation Desert Fox.

F = G-H

G: For this aircraft use the last digit of the “nose number.” The famous “Gooney Bird” was primarily used as a transport during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

H: 473 of this aircraft were built between 1954 and 1955 and the aircraft was last flown by the Air Force in 1958.

I = J + K

J: This forward air controller aircraft (FAC) is the only one in the air park with a rear propeller.

K: This was the first operational aircraft to fly faster than the speed of sound in level flight.

L: This doll of an aircraft was a defense fighter and reconnaissance aircraft and was a BIG aircraft resulting from a need for long range. It was last flown in 1985.
