PT: Também conhecida por
“Ponte Antiga”, é um dos símbolos de Tavira. Sobre a
sua origem existem divergentes teorias, sendo que a mais provável é
a existência de uma anterior ponte romana do século III, que terá
sido reconstruída, ou mesmo construída uma em seu lugar, no início
do período medieval, pelo que alguns também apelidam esta ponte de
“Ponte Românica de Tavira”.
Ligando as duas margens do rio Gilão,
bem no centro de Tavira, esta Ponte tem, portanto, sofrido diversas
alterações ao longo dos séculos, ficando no século XVII com o seu
aspecto actual. Desde 1989, aquando as grandes cheias que aqui
tiveram lugar, a ponte passou a ser pedonal.
Hoje em dia é ponto de passagem
obrigatória pela sua beleza e assimetria, concedendo uma bonita
paisagem da cidade de Tavira.

as "Old Bridge", it’s one of the symbols of Tavira. About its
origin there are divergent theories, and the more likely is the
existence of an earlier Roman bridge of the third century, which
has been rebuilt, or even a built in its place in early medieval
period, which some also call this bridge the “Roman Bridge of

Linking the
two banks of the river Gilão in the center of Tavira, this bridge
has therefore undergone several changes over the centuries, but in
the seventeenth century it receives its current appearance. Since
1989, during the great flood that took place here, the bridge
became pedestrian.
Today
it’s required point of passage for its beauty and asymmetry,
with a beautiful landscape of the city of
Tavira.

traçado actual não é tão remoto, parecem comprová-lo os poucos e
escassos documentos gráficos de que se dispõem, já que as
descrições escritas se referem a ela a tempos bem mais
antigos.

Cardoso já informa que a
ponte "é torreada no princípio o no fim".
PT: Em 1712, o Padre António Carvalho da
Costa, no Vol.III da sua "Corografia Portuguesa" diz que "a
ponte de Tavira tem sete arcos".
PT: O coronel engenheiro Sande de
Vasconcelos, na "Planta de
Tavira" informa que "a ponte foi feita pelos romanos e reedificada
pelo Exmº Conde Vale de Reis, terceiro avô do Exmº Marquês de
Loulé".

indica que não. Certo será que no tempo romano ali (provavelmente
no mesmo sítio em que esta se ergue) terá havido uma construção
romana. Mas o que ali está de romano tem o tipo de construção pelo
que mais correcto será chamá-la românica.

really a roman bridge? It seems not. Probably in the time of roman
there was(probably in the same place) a Roman construction. But
what there is in Roman type of construction is therefore more
correct to call it is Romanesque.
