Geocache Description:

A 6 x 4 inch cylinder in the vicinity of some forgotten Alameda history.

Ask a senior citizen from Alameda about the pioneering days of aviation on the island and you might expect to be regaled with stories about Pan-Am's China Clippers flying from Alameda to faraway spots across the Pacific, or exciting tales of Naval Air power during World War II including the Doolittle Raid. But the history of aviation on Alameda actually precedes these more famous exploits from the site of the now-closed Naval Air Station.

After the public's enthusiasm for flying from Charles Lindbergh's trans-Atlantic flight in 1927, the UC Regents decided to build an airport on 458 acres of Alameda marshland a wealthy alum had bequeathed to the university a few years earlier. The marsh was drained, graded and eventually the airport made it's festive debut on August 16, 1930.

The airport was a great success for a few years, ferrying passengers and freight, as well as a popular site for aerial extravaganzas and general aviation. But the Depression Era economy, the buildup of the military airfield directly to the west and the encroachment of urban development doomed Alameda's first airport. The airport closed without fanfare in 1941.

While looking for the cache, try to ignore the noise of the nearby auto traffic or the sports fields, and listen for the echos of long gone aircraft flying in the area.
