Geocache Description:

Hidden in the bush is a long abandoned cave once used as a hermit's home. Here is where we selected to hide our cache. The path in is not so easy and requires a lot of bush bashing, following cans and ribbons.

If you do the walk correctly then you will get to see one of the other higlights of this area, the abandoned explosives tunnel above Woy Woy train tunnel.

Hidden in the bush is a long abandoned cave once used as a hermit's home. Bits and pieces tell the story of someone having lived there with remnants left behind like the makeshift drum used as a shower, old cassettes and batteries from listening to long forgotten tunes, even a clothes line hanging from the roof of the cave. I would like to think that the munitions box might have been a useful trophy found in the bush, left behind from the tunnel cut in rock above Woy Woy tunnel where explosives were installed in WWII, to destroy the railway tunnel in case the Japanese hit our shores and advanced up the coast.

There is a lot of history in the vicinity of this hermit's cave, the Basalt Quarry light rail line travelled from the quarry (now Woy Woy tip) along the ridge to empty its load down a chute to the crusher below then loaded onto carriages for transport along the main rail line. Hidden in the bush are remnants of this light rail, bits of long forgotten history. Also check out the waterfall with the dam below, once used for the old abattoir, a very pretty spot.

It is a bit of bush bash to the cave, but there are tracks around, keep your eyes open for them. Follow the ribbons and the cans.

We recommend starting from Woy Woy tip and coming in through the fence there (there's an official hikers hole in it), do not come along the train tracks, as it would be just a tad dangerous.
