Geocache Description:

One of 7 feeder caches for the Eskapades bonus cache. These caches were originally set when Mrs TC was suffering from a gammy knee and was unable to walk over rough ground. They are therefore suitable for those with children or who are physically unable to do more strenous caches. Glen Esk is a gorgeous place and a trip to the end of there and back makes a lovely drive. Just think how lucky Mr TC is - he actually gets paid to spend time here!
There is space to pull off the road at each cache.

The Retreat was built as a cosy cottage in the 1840s by Rear-Admiral, JE Wemyss as a “retreat” from his life at sea. After his death in 1854, and spent time as a hunting lodge. It was again extended in the 1920s and the distinctive footage built. The estate eventually built a new shooting lodge at Milldens and the retreat remained mostly empty, only occasionally serving as a holiday house for the lairds friends.

Glenesk Folk Museum was set up in 1955 at the Retreat by local farmer's daughter and teacher Miss Greta Michie, with the help of Lord and Lady Dalhousie. The museum was based on folk museums she had visited whilst travelling in Norway. The Retreat houses an large collection of artefacts, some of which are now on display in the museum here. As well as keeping the history of the glen alive, the Retreat has also given employment to the women and young people of the glen who would otherwise have none.

As well as the museum which was refurbished in 2007 and houses displays of costumes, maps, photos and tools showing how people have lived in the Glen since prehistoric times as well as reconstructions of rooms from the 1890s, The Retreat has a shop and excellent tearoom (we can reccomend it - good value meals and yummy home baking)
There is a small charge for entrance to the museum. The Retreat is open daily from mid May until the end of October.

Cache is a 35mm film container.
