Geocache Description:

NOTE: These coordinates above DO NOT represent the location of the cache. They will take you to the (or “my”) approximate geographical center of the twin cities – which is a good place to begin your hunt.

Even before the advent of Internet technologies such as MapQuest and Google Earth, I have enjoyed studying maps. I can spend hours absorbing the details of a map and always try to look at maps and/or satellite photos before traveling to a new location – or a new cache. One interesting phenomenon that may be observed while studying such things is the occurrence of geoglyphs. Geoglyphs may be formed by either natural or man-made or - as some speculate - “other” forces. To help you along, some examples of these include the Nazca lines, crop circles and the Marree Man which was just discovered relatively recently in 1998 and is the largest such formation on Earth. Most geoglyphs are formed intentionally, but some apparently happen by chance.

Our local version of this phenomenon is not as dramatic or elegant as those noted above, and represents a type of portrait…but the subject is far, far away from being a local. The formation is oriented to enjoy the sunset.

Since the actual location of the Twin Cities’ “geoglyph” would probably be a bit too dangerous for caching, the cache has been placed at an offset location of:

-0.032 N and -0.291 W

Once you have located the formation, pinpoint the coordinates of the western apex of its northern orbital cavity and then subtract the offset numbers noted above.

There has been a change in the road configuration at Ground Zero. However, a correct calculation should "spark" your geo-sense - even though you might find yourself between a rock and a hard place.

Happy Hunting!
