PRESENT DAY
It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. "World War II" has just ended.
Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.
Outside, even through the shut window-pane, the world looked cold. Down in the street little eddies of wind were whirling dust and torn paper into spirals, and though the sun was shining and the sky a harsh blue, there seemed to be no colour in anything, except the posters that were plastered everywhere. The blackmoustachio'd face gazed down from every commanding corner. There was one on the house-front immediately opposite. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption said, while the dark eyes looked deep into Winston's own.
From where Winston stood it was just possible to read, picked out on its white face in elegant lettering, the three slogans of the Party:
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH
Twelve Months Ago
Winston had disliked her from the very first moment of seeing her. He knew the reason. It was because of the atmosphere of hockey-fields and cold baths and community hikes and general clean-mindedness which she managed to carry about her. He disliked nearly all woman, and especially the young and pretty ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers-out of unorthodoxy. Yet there is something about Julia, something Winston cannot fathom. He can't explain it.
Eleven Months Ago
It was madness, yet Winston and Julia could not stop meeting. It is as if their illicit romance is symbolic of an intellectual rebellion against the Party; against Big Brother. From the first time Julia have slipped him the message that states "NZKYPUCDEWOOFXAPKPALLGSA EOZGXQSXGYEBXWBHTALHBGRPLHKIAUI", Winstons preconceptions has vanished. After that, they begin a clandestine romantic relationship, first meeting in the Pavillion and later near the Mall,then regularly.
As the affair got more torrid, Winston realizes he is in need of help. After all, Katharine never incited such feelings from Winston. Besides there isn't realy anybody to pour out his sorrows to. Parsons wasn't exactly a person Winston can relate to intellectually, Syme just seems too much of a Yes Man. O'Brien maybe just the person to talk to. winston has to be careful though, the thought Police is everywhere. There was of course no way of knowing whether winston was being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in Winston's wire whenever they wanted to. Winston had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct—in the assumption that every sound he made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.
Ten Months Ago
Winston has being sharing his thoughts with O'Brien for the past month. He feels a lot better and encouraged by O Brien to express his feelings. The book "The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Enigma Collectivism" by Russell Schwager given by O Brien was a great help too allowing Winston to finally relate to his current strange behavior.
Eight Months Ago
The daily electroshock jolts Winston out of his dream world. Winston knew better than to share his feelings with anyone, not Emmanuel Goldstein and certainly not O Brien. winston has only himself to blame. The Thought Police has finally caught up with him torturing him and brainwashing him to make him forget Julia...but Winston can't seem to get his head around her. During the days of torture and brainwashing, Winston surrenders intellectually, but strives to keep his innermost heart inviolate: He knows he will eventually be killed, but secretly he intends to continue hating Big Brother (the embodiment of the Party) - and loving Julia. One tiny victory he reserves for his moment of death: The Party could not change his feelings and make him betray Julia in his heart.
Five Months Ago
Julia! Julia! Julia, my love! Julia! whereupon O'Brien rushes in and doesn't question Winston anymore, and then sends him to Room 101, the most feared room in the Ministry of Love. Winston asked O Brien once, what was in Room "101". O Brien remarks you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.
Two Month Ago
O Brien I tell you Winston, that reality is not external. Reality exists in the human mind, and nowhere else. Not in the individual mind, which can make mistakes, and in any case soon perishes: only in the mind of the party, which is collective and immortal. Whatever the party holds to be truth, is truth. It is impossible to see reality except by looking through the eyes of the Party.
But how can Winston help see what is in front of his eyes? Two and two are four. Yet, sometimes, they are five and sometimes there are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once.
Only when Winston can fathom "2+2=5" can he be declared sane.
One Month Ago
Winston sees Julia at the Pavillion by the Institution. With distaste, each remembers the unauthorized and unorthodox feelings they once shared for each other. Julia remarks sometimes...they threaten you with something - something you can't stand up to, can't even think about. And then you say, 'Don't do it to me, do it to somebody else, do it to so-and-so.' ... And after that, you don't feel the same towards the other person any longer.
PRESENT DAY
Winston gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.
