En stor del av marken i nuvarande Norra Sorgenfri ägdes av staden och var så kallade stadsägor. Detta resulterade i att flera allmänna institutioner etablerades i området. Norr om kvarteret etablerades Malmös arbetsinrättning som senare kom att bli Värnhems sjukhus (långvårdssjukhus) som idag till stora delar är studentbostäder. I samma kvarter finns bl a kvinnohärbärge, gymnasium och ett äldreboende.
Stora avrivna ytor, förfallna byggnader och en del ”skumma verksamheter” gör att området inte har någon hög status. Att Malmös prostitutionsstråk finns i området bidrar också till ett dåligt anseende.
Much of the land in the current North Sorgenfri owned by the city and was so called urban plots. This led to several public institutions were established in area. North of the neighborhood was established in Malmö working system which later came to be Conscription Home hospital (long-term care hospitals), which today is largely student housing. In the same neighborhood bl is a women's shelter, gymnasium and a retirement.
Large avrivna surfaces, buildings, and some "suspicious activities" means that the area has a high status. The Malmö prostitution streets in the area also contributes to a bad reputation.
