Patudles: Hiked to cache site today to find it being covered in regrowth. Only a small portion of the spillway shows and it is quite a muddy bushwack to get to it. No place to really hide a cache near the spillway to keep it out of water danger. Back down the trail it is so over grown you cannot see the spillway and so I decided to just archive it.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located on a spur trail that leads to what is called the "Crown Jewel" of the Iron Goat Trail - a water reservoir and it's timber spillway nestled at the foot of spectacular ravine leading nearly to the summit of 5,386 foot high Windy Mountain.

Built in 1910 as part of the Great Northern's fire protection system, this working timber structure was discovered accidentally by a work party in 1991 trying to find a solution to the drainage problems occurring on the old railroad grade at the foot of this former snowshed.
Spillways function as channels to carry off excess water. This reservoir's location, in a stream flowing down steep slopes, had a sufficient supply of water year-round to play an important part in protecting the timber snowsheds in this area from fire.

You can access the trail to this cache off of the upper trail of the Iron Goat Trail. There are three points of access to the Iron Goat Trail, Wellington, Scenic at the Iron Goat Interpetive Center and Martin Creek Trailhead. All but the parking lot at Scenic Interpetive Center require parking passes. Cache is a small camoed container that will hold small items. Please tuck the cache back under and out of sight after signing.
