Geocache Description:

I recently found out about this dike from the geologic map of the area, though I've driven past here a couple of times in the past and never noticed it, or at least never realized that it was volcanic in nature. It's very fascinating to see up-close, and in some places it looks almost unnatural. It's about a quarter-mile hike from the nearest road to the cache, and the most difficult part is finding a place to cross a couple of shallow washes along the way.

The Utah Geological Survey publication Interim Geologic Map of the San Rafael Desert 30' x 60' Quadrangle, Emery and Grand Counties, Utah, by Hellmut H. Doelling, describes the dikes as "Dark-gray igneous rock with abundant phlogopite, olivine, and carbonate mafic mineral pseudomorph phenocrysts and vesicle fillings in a phlogopite-rich, microcrystalline matrix that contains small percentages of sanidine, apatite, hematite, and magnetite. 0 to 1 meter (0-3 ft) thick dikes intruded into Middle Jurassic Entrada Sandstone." Well, ok, but they're pretty cool nonetheless.
