Geocache Description:

All individuals with an interest in treasure hunting are invited to
the “Race for the Cache” / Meet & Eat. This event is taking
place during the Perch Fest and Gran Prix on Sunday, August 9th and is intended to showcase some of Portage's highlights including our excellent park system. It will also give you a chance to meet and socialize with other cachers in the area.

Event Details

At 2:00pm, all teams participating in the Race for the Cache aspect of the event will assemble at an area within the limits of the festival taking place in downtown Portage. Each team will be given a “Cacheport.” This booklet includes the locations of the caches, and information about our city. All caches will be hidden within the limits of Portage.

Teams of 1 to 4 individuals will be placed in one of two categories based on their number of previous combined finds. The beginner category (99 combined finds or less) is for teams with little to no experience geocaching but would like to improve their treasure hunting skills. The advanced category (100+ finds) is for experienced geocachers who are comfortable using USGS maps and GPS navigation. “Newbie” cachers are encouraged to partner up with more experienced cachers to get a feel for the sport.

The traditional model of Geocaching will be followed, leaving behind a small trinket in each cache and taking the one that has been left by the previous cacher, but this event does have a twist. When you find each cache, you will also need to place a unique sticker on your “cacheport,” which are provided in each cache.

Once you have found all the caches and have completed your collection of “cacheport” stickers, return to the “Race for the Cache” HQ at the festival and turn in your “cacheport” to the Portage Parks & Recreation staff.

At 6:00pm sharp, all teams are to meet back at the headquarters whether or not they finished the "race." At this time, the winning team(s), as well as second and third place team(s) will be announced and prizes will be given (Choice of unactivated geocoins to the winners).

After the short award presentation, there will be time to eat, sign the log book, and socialize with other cachers. Food will be available for purchase at the festival, or you can bring your own. Therefore, if you're not interested in participating in the "race" but just want to socialize with other cachers and score this event as a find, show up at 6pm!

If you don’t have enough time to finish the race, don’t worry! The race caches will be permanently placed for you to come back and experience more of our area at another time. I will ask the Reviewer to wait to publish these caches until August 10th so that everyone participating in the event has a chance to score some FTFs!!
