Geocache Description:

The longest timber bridge in Australia spans the Murrumbidgee River
at Gundagai. The Prince Alfred Bridge was built in 1866 and formally
opened in 1867.It formed part of the Hume Highway until superseeded
by the impressive Sheahan Bridge in 1977.

The Prince Alfred Bridge has a total span of 921 metres and was the
longest bridge in NSW until the Sydney Harbour Bridge was completed
in 1932.In 1902,a second railway bridge was built near the Prince Alfred Bridge with a
total span of 819 metres.

The Prince Alfred Bridge has been classified by the National Trust
as a structure whose preservation is essential to Australia's
heritage in 1975.

Gundagai is known as the "Town of Historic Bridges" and the Prince
Alfred Bridge is highly valued by locals and tourists
alike, contributing much to the community's sense of identity. When
the bridge was threatened with demolition after the new bridge was
built, the residents fought to save it,thus showing the esteem in
which the community holds the bridge.

The cache is small and is blended in to its surroundings. It is
not on top of the bridge as that is now closed to traffic and walkers. It contains a log sheet and pencil within a zip-lock bag and has room for small swaps.... FTF HONORS TO :.growingupisoptional..
