Geocache Description:

Read carefully! The cache is not at the final coordinates! This started out as a multi-cache, but two stages were too easily muggled so I simplified it. The final is still in the same place.

This cache is intended to replicate the steps taken in April, 2006 by my 4th grade History Fair group in their quest to locate evidence of the original golf course in Woodstock, VT. Our first stop was the Norman Williams Public Library, where, in a special collection, they keep a book written by Frederick C. Clark in 1959 titled, “The Woodstock Country Club, 1895-1959” (W080 Country Club). We traveled next to the Town Clerk’s office in the Woodstock Town Hall where we examined the original deed of seventy acres on Mt. Peg conveyed to the Woodstock Country Club in 1898.(Bk.34/Pg.366) In the Photo Gallery is an image from the collection of the Woodstock Historical Society depicting a barren Mt. Peg and a party of golfers from 1896. You will need to bring this image with you on this quest. (The final coordinates bring you to the place where the golf picture was taken). You might also want to get the map "Walk Woodstock!" from either the Chamber of Commerce information booth on the Green or here: http://www.nps.gov/mabi/planyourvisit/upload/walkwoodstocktrailmap.pdf

Parking Coordinates are N43 37.295 W72 30.934. Take note of the name of the road you come in on. Golf Avenue used to end at the former clubhouse, a building that still exists as a private residence, although moved down the hill from its original location. (There’s a picture of it in the gallery.) Good luck from here on. Try to imagine this place 110 years ago, when golfers were dodging cow pies as the new game took hold across America, and in particular, here at one of the very first golf clubs in Vermont. The cache itself is a Pelican container stocked with golfing-related items. It is located near the rock which "appears" closest to Bill Hewitt's left hand in the old photo. Although the site looks very different today, the rocks haven't moved.
