Mahican-Mohawk Trail – Power House Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Capt. Bob: I recently received this email
“Who gave you permission to place your geocache hide? It may be a government (town, state, or federal), business, or person. I'll need a name and contact info (phone or email) of the property owner to publish a geocache. Saying it's "public property" will not get your geocache published. This can be the trickiest question to answer - if it seems like public property you can call the town hall to ask, or try to find an assessor's map online (which lists owners) by doing a Google search for GIS town name map, and then contacting them. For municipal property, often someone in the recreation department can give permission.

None of my caches comply with this directive and I won't change them, therefore I will be archiving all of them. It’s been fun while it lasted!

Geocache Description:

This cache is part of the series of caches placed along the Mahican-Mohawk Trail, however this cache is not on the trail, it’s about ½ mile from the trail, off Station Road, in the South River State Forest, Conway.

This location once had two hydroelectric generators, a DC generator that fed power to the Conway Electric Street Railway Company, and an AC generator for the town. The concrete dam that is still standing was built in 1910 to replace a timber and stone structure. You can still see the penstock and parts of the generator base in the old foundation. The two turbines that powered the generators were made in Holyoke, but they are gone now and remain in storage in Montague.

Conway Electric Street Railroad information: (visit link)

Parking can be found just off Station Road. It’s a steep descent down to the dam, then an even steeper drop to the power house. Just follow the path along the fence. You are looking for a small loc-n-loc.
