Uppe på Grogarnsberget ligger resterna efter Gotlands
näst största fornborg. Fornborgen tros ha uppförts
under senare delen av järnåldern och använts under
vikinga- samt tidig medel-tid.
Utsikten från borgen är magnifik. Under vikingatiden
bör en fiendeflotta ha kunnat ses på ett avstånd
av 14-18 natutiska mil – en sträcka motsvarande 5-6
timmars rodd. Genom att tända vårdkasar kunde man
från Grogarnsberget signalera om den annalkande faran till
bl.a. fornborgen på Torsburgen.

The remnants of Gotland’s next largest hillfort can be seen
on the clifftop of “Grogarnsberget”. The hillfort is
thought to have been built in the later Iron Age and used in the
Viking Age and Medieval Period.
The view from the hillfort is magnificent. In the Viking Age an
enemy fleet could be spotted at a distance of 14-18 nautic miles
– a distance which would have taken 5-6 hours to row.
By making use of the beacon system, whereby fires were lit in
succession along the coast, approaching dangers could be signaled
to other places, such as the hillfort of
“Torsburgen”.
