The San Lorenzo’s Charterhouse was founded by Tommaso Sanseverino
in 1306 and it is listed in the World Heritage List by UNESCO since
1998. Thanks to the many baroque buildings, developed throughout
450 years, it is one of the largest Italian monasteries. Its great
cloister is the largest in the World. The spiral and the elliptic
staircases, the ceramic paving of the library, the many wood and
marble inlays and the huge barrels in the cellars make this
monastery a unique place to visit. A tale tells about a one
thousand eggs omelet, cooked here for the army of Charles V of
Spain.
The cache is placed nearby one of the seats down the alleys of
the great garden. The garden can be reached from the entrance to
the exterior courtyard (N40 20.145 E15 39.128), and then turning on
the left of the Facade. Alternatively, at the end of the visit to
the monastery, crossing the gate of the Prior’s garden (N40 20.239
E15 39.051) you are just at the beginning of one of the alleys of
the great garden.
Unfortunately at entrance to the monastery you need to step down
some stairs, thus this site is unsituable for strollers and
wheelchairs.

La Certosa di San Lorenzo fu fondata da Tommaso Sanseverino nel
1306 e dal 1998 è Patrimonio dell’Umanità (UNESCO). Grazie alle
numerose costruzioni, principalmente in stile barocco, aggiunte in
un periodo di circa 450 anni, è fra le più grandi certose esistenti
in Italia. Il suo chiostro è addirittura il più grande al mondo. La
scala a chiocciola, lo scalone ellittico, la pavimentazione in
ceramica di Vietri della biblioteca, gli innumerevoli intarsi in
legno e in marmo, le enormi botti delle cantine la rendono un posto
unico da visitare. Si narra che nella sua cucina fosse stata
cucinata una leggendaria frittata da mille uova per l’esercito di
Carlo V di Spagna.
Il cache si trova nelle vicinanze di uno dei fondali con sedili
con cui si chiudono i viali del grande giardino della clausura. Il
giardino è comodamente raggiungibile dall’ingresso della corte
esterna (N40 20.145 E15 39.128), girando, poi, a sinistra della
Facciata, in fondo al cortile. Oppure, alla fine della visita alla
Certosa, uscendo dal cancello del giardino del Priore (N40 20.239
E15 39.051) ci si trova all’inizio di uno dei viali del grande
giardino della clausura.
Purtroppo per accedere alla certosa bisogna scendere alcuni
scalini, quindi il sito è inadatto all'uso di passeggini e sedie a
rotelle.
