The Watson Trophy was named in honor of Thomas J. Watson, Sr.,
who led IBM's growth from the 1920's through the 1950's. During the
old IBM years of this former plantsite, IBM hosted several Watson
Trophy intramural sporting competitions, such as golf, volleyball,
trap and skeet, running, and softball. Teams were set up by skill
level, ranging from highly skilled to beginner, so that anyone who
wanted to could participate. The games were set up so that all the
players played all games on a rotational basis to ensure equal play
time for all. At the end of the season, participants were invited
to a Watson Trophy dinner where Watson Trophies were awarded to
winners in each sport and level division.
There used to be a couple of softball fields on the plantsite,
as part of the recreation area. The recreation areas are no longer
around, but now there is this new park and a new softball /
baseball field.
As this is a San Jose city park, park hours are sunrise to one
hour after sunset. If a ball game is in progress, attempting to
search for this cache will be very difficult.
The cache is a small Tic Tac candy sized box covered with duct
tape and contains a logsheet and some very small trinkets. Please
bring your own pen.
