Geocache Description:

Outhouse: The little house out back of the big house, usually with the sanitary facilities.

Outhouses come in all shapes and sizes. Thomas Jefferson, one of our founding fathers, had a pair built of brick and octagonal in shape. (Hence the term built like a brick **** house).

Growing up in central Florida in the early fifties, indoor plumbing was very innovative and usually reserved for the fairer and more delicate sex. NOTE: I had four girl cousins that swore like longshore men and were mean as snakes but were too delicate to use the outdoor facilities.
The outhouse on the farm (a one hole affair) came equipped with a bucket of lime, the Sears and Roebuck catalog, corn cobs, (corn kernels removed of course) and in later years toilet paper!

I have observed a number of strange things in and around that out house, especially if the door was not properly latched after being last visited. Nothing like needing to make a visit, opening the door and watching a huge possum crawl out of the hole. Or sitting down to take care of business and having a rat snake fall across your shoulders from the rafters above. Talk about a moving experience!

My grandfather who was one of the original multitaskers, used to take a bucket of cracked corn (scratch feed) to the outhouse with him. He would leave the door open and feed the chickens while he contemplated the world’s problems.

Although only a short distance from the end of Long Rife Road, dress to make two stream crossings and some bushwacking...and bring a pen. Remember that a straight line isn't always the shortest way to find the privacy of an outhouse. The cache is big enough to be easily spotted. Just remember when you open the door, you never know what you will find in the outhouse.
