The popular recreation trail along the coast in Pacific Grove is
built on an old rail right-of-way. The recreation trail ends at
Lovers Point Park, but the old rail line continued on. The Pacific
Grove train station was located where the mobile home park now
resides. The rail line followed the contour around the peninsula
through what is now the PG golf links and ended at Moss Beach
between Asilomar Beach and the present Spanish Bay Resort.
Although its use for trains has long since been abandoned, the
"Del Monte" route is still a Union Pacific right-of-way. A section
in a forested area of Pacific Grove is the regional open space park
'Southern Pacific Railroad Right-of-Way'. A small structure
commemorates the location of the Asilomar Train Stop.
The entrances to the open space are where it crosses
city streets. There is no need to cross private property to get to
this cache!
Aug 2010- upped the difficulty rating due to popular demand. I
thought this one was pretty easy, but its been challenging for
about half of the finders.
