Our family thought it would be great to explore the Newman Lake area. We each chose different areas to place a cache and give some history on the nearby area (the cache may not be located exactly as the history states but is close to the original location). Please enjoy the series: remember to bring a writing utensil, and as always feel free to CITO.
Congratulations to LLCOOL for FTF !
NEWMAN LAKE HISTORY TOUR 24 - MAPLE LEAF DAIRY
Irvin (1883) and Elsie (1888) Hattenburg married in Rathdrum, Idaho in 1913 purchased 80 acres, which bordered the shores of Newman Lake and was the homestead of the pioneer Muzzy Family. Milk Cows were purchased and the land fenced. On the existing land was a house, large barn and out buildings. The barn was updated and sterilizing equipment was purchased to complete the Maple Leaf Dairy. They established a mile delivery route, carrying both milk and cream to the door steps of Newman Lake residents. In the 1940’s, the dairy was sold and the Hattenburgs retired to a home in Spokane, where Irvin died in 1961 and Elsie in 1966. The maple trees still stand there and building is one old the original Muzzy buildings.
