Geocache Description:

This cache was inspired by a monument to honor William NcNeil who was lost on the ill fated steamer the SS Central America. The ship, sometimes called The Ship of Gold, sank in a hurricane in September 1857. Not only did 400 passengers and crew go down but also 30,000 pounds of gold. At the time of her sinking, the gold was valued at approximately $2 MILLION USD. The loss shook public confidence in the economy and contributed to the infamous Panic of 1857. In 1987 the ship was located by the use of Bayesian search theory. Significant amounts of gold and artifacts were recovered. Thirty-nine insurance companies then filed suit claiming they had a right to the gold. After a legal battle, 92% of the gold was awarded to the discovery team in 1996. The total value of the gold was estimated at $100-150 million. A single gold ingot weighing 80 pounds sold for $8 million USD and is recognized as the most valuble piece of currency in the world! You can visit the gravestone of William McNeil at N43 12.525 W078 47.994 The cache however is not near any of the tombstones in the cemetery. Please treat this area with great respect. There is no need to touch any of the gravestones. NO NIGHT CACHING. CONGRATS to the ever fast TUCCI'S TEAM on another FTF
