Ann Arbor Car Ferry
The Tale Continues…

Prerequisite Reading: Bootleggers Shootout GC1P1W4

…. The Sheriffs Dept. quickly spread the word across the state, to be on the lookout for the two bootleggers, Tony and Louie. Both were aware of this and after a couple of days hiding in the woods near Frankfort, Tony decided that they would get on the car ferry in Elberta and get out of the state and over to Wisconsin. They purchased a ticket and put their car in line to be loaded onto the ferry. Just before boarding the ship, Tony remembered a pill bottle he hid years ago with some money in it that he didn’t want to give to his boss after a profitable bootlegging job. Surprised, it was still there, he emptied it out, except some business card someone gave him and a piece of paper.
As was usual procedure, a ferry worker would walk by the vehicles and hang a hook with a rubber ball and number on it so they knew what vehicles to load. Soon the train cars and other vehicles were loaded onto the ship. Clyde, one of the workers, got into Tony’s car and noticed broken glass on the inside and what appeared to be holes on the outside body. Having been on the ship he never heard the news about the shootout so thought little about it and went on his way.
Half way across Lake Michigan, Clyde went down below deck to check on the train cars to make sure they were all still fastened down tight to the rails. He walked by Tony and Louie’s car and thought twice about it and decided to tell the captain. Of course the captain heard the news and realized that they had the two suspects aboard the ship. He quickly sent word to the Manitowoc Harbor and requested the sheriffs be at the dock when he arrives. He then had Clyde show him the car, where he searched it and found some guns and shells that he took back up to the bridge.
The rest of the trip went along as usual, until the ship backed up to the unloading ramp. Here the sheriffs were waiting and Tony and Louie could see them from up on deck. They knew something was up so he and Louie made their way to the lower deck and to the car. They jumped inside to get their guns but they were nowhere to be found. Clyde and another boat worker saw the bootleggers in the car and quickly closed the doors on them throwing a chain used to fasten down the trains over the car and across the doors. Clyde grabbed a crow bar and had it ready to swing at anyone trying to get out of the rear shot-out window. Trapped, Tony and Louie sat waiting for the sheriffs to arrive.
The car ferry office sent word over to the Benzie sheriff’s Dept. that the two bootleggers were caught and were being sent back to Michigan for a hearing.
Later that week, a citation was given to Clyde for his fast thinking and going beyond the call of duty. Tony and Louie were convicted and spent some time in the county jail. After their release they headed downstate and never made there way up north again.
