Venda, the Land of Legend. Although it has now been incorporated into the new South Africa, Venda remains a unique area, with an intriguing culture and a diverse landscape. Most of the land around is communal, so one is free to explore without the fear of trespassing.
South of the Soutpansberg, the high rainfall supports thick forests, tea, coffee and tropical fruit plantations. It feeds many waterfalls, rivers, dams and the sacred lake of Fundudzi. In contrast the North is generally arid with the exception of the river valleys and areas surrounding the natural springs.
This region has had virtually no exposure to tourism, as a result you will not find your typical tourist markets, township tours or artificial ethnic scenes. The vhaVenda are peaceful people for whom ancient tradition is still very much a part of everyday life. Our visits to the local villages still cause much excitement. One can barter for traditional crafts such as baskets, mats or pots from the homes of the villagers or you can join the queue to see the Sangoma (take one of our staff to help translate).
The vhaVenda however where not the first people to inhabit this region. There are many caves dotted through the sandstone outcrops with evidence of the Bushmans presence.
New rock art sites have recently been discovered in the Dambale and Domboni hills and bits of pottery can be found through out the area. Stone age tools up to 2 million years old lie scattered between the Mutale and Limpopo rivers.
The beauty of this area and Venda in general, because it is communal property, is that one can explore. Enjoy the freedom but please respect the traditions and culture of the people who live here.
