See the remains of the giant Tamarack Mining Company's #5 shaft engine and boiler complex, just a short walk off Tamarack Waterworks road.
Just off the road (look for a tall, thin Ameritech cable junction box) are the massive remains of the Tamarack #5 shaft compressor/engine/boiler house complex. Just beyond that is a private property storage yard, so be careful please.
I have a great view of this area on my website at this URL: (visit link)
You are looking for a small 35mm film canister with a logbook only, so bring pen/pencil.
In the photo labeled "Miners at #5 shaft", you can see the stone incline for moving coal into the boiler house, and in the next photo below is a second view of the opposite end of the complex. Print these if possible so you can do a then/now comparison!
A few photos above is "The great hoisting engine, from a 1906 postcard". This was one of the largest in the world at the time. In fact, this engine was later moved to the Ahmeek mine's #3/4 shaft between Ahmeek and Mohawk. Part of that complex is still standing and being used today.
